Buyer’s Guide to Aluminium Chequer Plate (Tread Plate)

Aluminium chequer plate, a popular type of metal sheet also known as checker plate or tread plate, boasts a distinctive raised five-bar diamond pattern. Renowned for its lightweight composition, durability, and aesthetically pleasing appearance, this material has become a key component across several diverse industries.

Our comprehensive guide delves into aluminium chequer plate’s properties, applications, grades, and finishes. Armed with this knowledge, you’ll make informed purchasing decisions, ensuring both functionality and design excellence.

Properties of Aluminium Chequer plate

Aluminium chequer plate is engineered from high-grade aluminium, acclaimed for its remarkable durability and lightweight nature, which provides clear advantages to alternative materials like steel and corrosion resistance. This material is adaptable to diverse environments thanks to its wide range of thicknesses and patterns, including the quintessential diamond or square designs that enhance its visual appeal and functionality.

How is Aluminium Chequer plate manufactured?

The production of aluminium chequer plate involves a meticulous process where aluminium is rolled through a press, imprinting it with the desired chequer pattern. This technique beautifies the material and amplifies its strength and grip, making it perfect for safety-oriented applications such as walkways, stairs, kick plates, platforms and ramps, including wheelchair accessibility ramps.

After embossing, the sheets undergo trimming and treatment processes to boost their durability and aesthetic, aligning with the highest quality standards.

Benefits of Aluminium Chequer plate

There are a number of advantages to using aluminium chequer plate for your project, including:

  • Non-Slip Material: The non-slip properties enhance safety, even on wet or oily surfaces.
  • Durability: It stands up to diverse conditions, resisting wear and tear.
  • Corrosion Resistance: Aluminium’s natural resistance to corrosion makes it ideal for outdoor or marine environments.
  • Lightweight: Its lighter weight facilitates easier handling and installation compared to mild or stainless steel counterparts, which can weigh three times more in some applications. This also further provides transportation and labour cost savings.
  • Aesthetic Versatility: Suitable for both functional and decorative purposes, its unique look can elevate any project by adding a distinctive industrial appeal to any structure with suitability for using a chequer plate as a wall covering product.

How do you maintain Aluminium Chequer plate?

Aluminium chequer plate maintenance is straightforward, involving regular cleaning with mild detergent and water. To avoid damage, harsh chemicals and abrasives should be avoided. For extra shine and protection, aluminium-specific polishes or waxes can be applied.

What applications can Aluminium Chequer plate be used for?

The adaptability of aluminium chequer plate clearly shows in its wide use across various sectors, highlighting its importance in construction and transportation, manufacturing, and more. Known for its exceptional durability and corrosion resistance, it is a top choice for flooring and cladding in construction projects. Its raised pattern boosts grip, making it extremely useful for industrial flooring, walkways, and decorative wall coverings, blending functionality with style.

In the world of transportation, especially in the automotive and aerospace industries, the mix of strength and lightness of aluminium chequer plates makes them ideal materials for making vehicle parts like mudguards, truck beds, and trailer floors. This material is notable for its corrosion resistance, making it well-suited for marine environments, protecting against the elements.

Additionally, its use in manufacturing industrial machinery and equipment is significant. The non-slip surface and the capacity to support heavy loads without losing stability are essential for producing machine covers, workbenches, and floor gratings. Its strength is also crucial in building scaffolding and support structures, demonstrating its versatility and aiding in reducing labour costs and simplifying installation without compromising durability.

What grade is Aluminium Chequer plate?

Aluminium chequer plate is primarily available in the 5754H111 grade, renowned for its excellent corrosion resistance, even in marine conditions and high strength, making it an ideal choice for flooring in challenging environments. This grade offers a tensile strength of 190 – 260 MPa, ensuring durability under heavy loads and in high-traffic areas. Its superior welding properties, ease of cutting, forming, and drilling make 5754 versatile for a wide range of applications.

Finishing options for Aluminium Chequer plate

The standard mill finish is the most popular for aluminium chequer plate, providing a bright and shiny appearance that enhances the material’s aesthetic appeal. For projects requiring additional durability or colour, finishes such as decorative anodising or painting are available.

At Chequer Plate Direct, we offer painting in all the RAL colours. These finishes can significantly improve the material’s resistance to wear and environmental conditions. However, it’s important to note that they may wear over time on the raised parts of the pattern. Selecting a finish that balances aesthetic appeal with durability is crucial as a flooring product.

What size and thickness options does Aluminium Chequer plate come in?

At Chequer Plate Direct, we specialise in the sale of cut to size aluminium checker plate, tailored precisely to meet your project requirements. While we offer a range of standard sizes, including 2000mm x 1000mm, 2500mm x 1250mm, and 3000mm x 1500mm, it’s important to note that all our orders are custom cut to ensure the perfect fit for your specific needs.

The thickness of the aluminium chequer plate varies, with standard options being 1.5mm, 2mm, 3mm, 4.5mm, and 6mm. While we currently do not offer a 9.5mm option, our extensive selection is designed to meet most of our clients’ needs.

Choosing the right thickness and size is crucial for your project’s structural integrity and aesthetic outcome. For those unique requirements, we leverage precision cutting techniques, such as guillotines or plate saws, to cut aluminium chequer plate to any size, ensuring a custom fit that’s just right for your application.

Practical Considerations When Ordering Aluminium Chequer plate

When ordering cut plates, it’s important to consider that the chequered pattern may not align perfectly when placed adjacent. In these cases, trim strips can be used between plates to achieve a cohesive look. This detail is crucial for projects where aesthetic continuity is a priority.

In conclusion, aluminium chequer plates are a material that excels in durability, functionality, and aesthetic appeal. Its broad application range, ease of maintenance, and customisable options in terms of grades, finishes, and sizes make it a valuable asset for designers, architects, and engineers. With the insights provided in this guide, your selection of aluminium chequer plate will meet and exceed your project’s requirements, ensuring longevity and maintaining its distinctive appearance for years to come.
